What would your perfect work day be like?

Well, I’ll tell you, question from an internet blogging prompt campaign. My perfect day of work would be me waking up at the asscrack of noon, immediately sitting down in my chair and hammering out a continuous eight hours of solid writing. I’d easily maintain an average of more than 2000 words per hour. Every word would be perfectly spelled, fit grammatically into the sentence, and marked with perfect punctuation. The ideas would flow out of me into a soupy goodness of story, and I’d be done with a book every week, without a need for an editor or proofreader.

Unfortunately, that just isn’t going to happen.

 

I’m really behind right now. I was supposed to be doing these blog posts every single day, but I’ve been letting them slip to the wayside as I try, in vain, to get caught back up in my writing schedule. I’m ashamed to say that I blew the three day lead I’d managed to build for myself earlier in August, and now, I’m actually several days behind. I was supposed to have draft 2 of Seven Keys 3 done and ready to go to the editor by Friday. I’m about 1/2 way through it now. Which is only because I’ve managed to pick up a little steam this weekend. I’ve done over six thousand words today.

That seems like a lot, but really, it isn’t as much as I’d like to have. I have other projects I want to work on, but Seven Keys has a defined release schedule. If I can’t get back ahead of that schedule I’m not going to be able to work on the other stories I want to develop.

 

But I’ll tell you about them anyway, because hey, that’s fun!

 

So, once I finish SK3, if there is enough time before I have to dive into SK4, I want to write a romance. Yeah, you read that right. A Romance.  I’ve actually spent a little time snowflaking the story. I have my three main characters all pretty well developed and I have a shell of an outline ready to go into the next big step of scene-by-scene breakdown. I really am looking forward to writing it.

I used the snowflake method for The Alchemist and The Arena (available now to newsletter subscribers) and it worked out pretty well for me. I had blocked off three days to work on it between Drafts 1 & 2 of SK3, but I ended up writing it in one. I was pretty proud of how it turned out, too. There’s a lot of untapped potential in that world. I could see myself going back to it.

But there are a lot of other projects I want to work into the schedule. I’ve got an idea for a short series run that would be my take on Robocop. You know, a remake of Robocop if the people doing it had any idea what the point of Robocop was in the first place.

Of course, I’d like to go back and visit Dinosaur Alien Invasion again, too. I have this weird idea in my head of doing several DAI stories all set in different locations. I’d use the same dino image on the cover, but put a different city or landscape behind him. They’d have titles like DINOSAUR ALIEN INVASION: LONDON!

Then of course, there are more Motomorphosis Industries books to write, and a whole slew of projects for Eldaraenth sitting untouched on my “to do eventually” list.

So, yeah. My perfect day of work would be me writing like God itself was in direct link to my hands, pushing all the raw ideas out into perfect, wonderful creations of amazing art.

 

In the meantime, though, I’ll just stick to any day that I can go to work, stay busy for a full eight hours, and not worry about a crazy person trying to stuff me into a blender.

 

That happens more often than you’d think.
