Empty Spaces Part 3

Empty

“We’ll pack up all our stuff and fly so far away…”

-Santa Fe, RENT

I’m confiding in you, internet. I’m pretty tired. After the very quickly made decision to move across the country, I’ve spent the last week in a tizzy of activity. I was trying to get ready for the trip, both with my crap and emotionally. I have to admit that neither one actually sunk in fully until Saturday night, a few hours before I was set to leave. I wasn’t even close to being ready to go. My apartment was full to the breaking of things I didn’t want to take with me or throw away. I had to make a hard sacrifice.

Because I didn’t really coincide the idea of moving across the country with the idea of leaving my home until Saturday night, I started out my 22 hour, 1500 mile journey after scrambling Sunday morning to cram a week’s worth of packing and cleaning into about 3 hours. I did manage to finish, though, and I dare say the results were pretty impressive. Of course, there is always more I could have done, and I regret leaving those tasks to the RoomLord.

Still, there is something to be said about the experience of driving 1524 miles, alone, across the country. There is something majestic and beautiful about the flatness of Nebraska and the cliffs of the Rocky Mountains. There is something wonderful in the adventure.

Now that I’m here, I have to begin the real work of recreating and finding myself and work. I’ve done some of that in advance. I’ve applied for some jobs. There are many more to apply for. This week, I will go out and explore the local places in search of work. My laundry is all done. My clothes are all ready. I’m in a place that will give me time to fail, but I’m also in a place that is full of opportunities that I didn’t have where I was. All of this will take some getting used to, but I think I’m ready for the challenge.
