My desk is covered with notebooks, scraps of paper, and pens of all shapes and colors. I love the little piles that make complete sense to me, but seem to be nothing but clutter to others. I like piles, it makes me feel like there is something important going on in my life, something big enough that I don’t have time to file things away. Filing is the task of a boring person, I don’t do no filin’!
Through my office window, I can tell that the sun is finally starting to come up outside. According to my phone, it’s about 45 degrees, a nice warm morning, and the high is in the 60s. That will be nice later, when I need to go outside to escape my family for a while. I love my family, and I am extremely lucky to have them in my life, but that many people can really send a person looking for a place to escape to. I think this year I might have to look extra hard.
My parents are back from Montana, and that means more people will show up than usual. That’s good, everyone missed my parents and it’s great to have them back. It’s good that people will want to come see them. I look forward to seeing some people I haven’t seen in years.
On my desk there are a couple of bills that I need to sit down and pay. I don’t need to worry about that today, there isn’t any mail anyway. I can get them paid, though. That means something pretty huge in the modern economy. I could always use more money, but at least I have the bills paid.
Oh, and there are pies in the kitchen. Real pies, made from pumpkins, cherries, and strawberries. My mom and niece made them last night. They smell yummy. I think I’ll see if I can convince some people around here that I should have pie for breakfast. It probably won’t work, but hey, it’s worth a shot.
I just jumped over from writing this to check twitter. There are a lot of great people already up and about this morning, and I read a few tweets before coming back here. It’s great to live in an age when we can instantly communicate with anyone from anywhere in the world. It is pretty amazing to think that I have friends all over the globe, and this morning, they are all talking about what they are thankful for.
I lean back in my comfy office chair, and look around this room. I can’t list all of the things I am thankful for. The things in this room alone would take an hour. My life has too many blessings to break them down, one at a time, and share them with all of you.
I am thankful to be here, living a life that is not easy, but still prosperous. I am thankful to have a life full of friends and family that can lift me up when I start to fall into depression. I am thankful that those same people will slap me across the face with reality if I start to go manically insane with an obsession over something.
I am thankful for the constant stream of people asking me, “How many words today?” It pushes me to get more done and lets me know they understand why I’ve been distant and unresponsive for a while. I’m going to have to make that up to some of them when this month is over.
I am thankful for my house, my car, my dog, my bed, and my cellphone. I’m not sure I could live without any of those things.
I am thankful that it hasn’t snowed yet. I don’t like the snow.
I am thankful that I can recognize how many amazing things I have to be thankful for in my life.
Happy Thanksgiving
I know that Thanksgiving is American Holiday (Canada has theirs in November), but I don’t think a day of thanks should have borders. Everyone has something they need to take a moment to appreciate. I think we should all push to make Thanksgiving a global holiday, celebrated in all corners of the world.
Oh, and one last note.
After midnight tonight, you can start your stupid Christmas season. You can start decorating, and buying presents, and put out your knick-knacks and what-have-yous. If you’ve already done any of that, you are responsible of not only a major social crime (and an extremely minor municipal crime if you live in Kansas City), but you are guilty of something much more severe: You’ve tried to skip Thanksgiving. I don’t know if that’s because you hate yourself, or just because you’re a self-righteous prick that thinks you’re too good to be thankful for what you have, but either way, you are a bastard. Thanksgiving is the third greatest holiday, and it deserves it’s own season.
Stop trying to give Thanksgiving’s season to Santa! He already gets all of December AND like two weeks from the middle of July.
Back off Santa, this is Turkey Day, and I think you should be thankful for that, fat man.
