#DoodeDay – 60 Minutes Edition

I set my timer to 60 minutes, loaded up three sketches and went to town working as quickly as I could. I wanted to make sure that I still had plenty of time to get some writing in tonight. It’s a find line to balance between being a doodler and being a blogger. It isn’t all that uncommon for me to spend an hour or two on one picture, which isn’t a good thing if I do get work as a freelancer. I just can’t afford to be that slow. So, I need to learn to work more quickly and still get down the quality I want.

The Murder-Corn

This guy popped into my head today while I was surfing the internet and somehow came across a giant pile of My Little Ponies fan art. These things happen at times. I have to admit, I spend a lot of time on some really strange websites, like Deviant Art, because they have great garb, weapon, and armor pictures. I’m a sucker for some LARP gear. Especially when there are tutorials on how to make it. I secretly long to be extremely crafty.

If I drum up any interest, I might even do a vectored black & white of this image to put on t-shirts. Actually, I’m pretty sure I’m going to do that anyway, because I really want a murder-corn t-shirt. Who doesn’t?

MATT SMASH

This picture came about entirely from me practicing drawing different poses. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but most of my doodles all have the same basic pose. I’m working to remedy this.

I kept it and colored it. This picture actually took the longest of the four I did in an hour. It took me right around twenty five minutes to do this one image, which is far too long.

Especially since now that it’s been colored, I don’t like it. That’s okay, though. I’ve come to accept as a writer that I’m going to throw away thousands of pages of crap, I need to deal with the fact that as a doodler I’m going to throw away millions of pages of crappy doodles.

Doodles don’t come as naturally to me as writing does.

WhyWHY!?

This guy was rescued from the scrap heap by pure chance of being accidently being clicked on when I was transferring images from my phone (which I use as a lazy man’s scanner) to my computer. He struck a nerve in my brain when I was sorting sketches, and I decided to give him a little once over.

Of course when I drew the original sketch, I had never intended him to get colored in or anything. I was just doodlin’ at work on some scrap paper to keep my hands busy when I was on the phone.

The original image was actually intended to be in the style of a my-face-when reaction style image from image boards.

Night Time

Nightime

I had about 15 minutes left to my hour of doodling tonight, so I decided to go ahead and do a quick digital painting. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and I’m experimenting with using some more distortion effects in my art. That’s how I created the yellow glow in the back ground.

I’m really proud of how the big tree turned out.
