Kiss From A Rose
I know that a lot of people will probably be shocked by this, but those who know me well will tell you I am actually an overly sentimental fool when it comes to music. What can I say, I am truly a sappy bitch. The reason I dig this Seal ditty, though, has nothing to do with the music itself, but rather, the memories associated with it.
Back in the day, probably every bit of 14 years ago now, I was a tubby, socially awkward eighth grader at Tall Oaks church camp. I spent a week chillin’ out, relaxin’ and acting all cool, and learning some awesome things about Saul Paul. There, though, I met a girl. She was the first girl that I ever noticed giving me the time of day, so, in the way of adolescence, that meant I was madly in love with her.
Long story short, and details omitted to protect the foolhardy, she was the first girl I ever made out with. This song was playing when it happened. Hey, leave me alone, it was 1997, the Batman Forever soundtrack was awesome. That was classy and romantic on my part.
Holding out for a Hero
Honest to god, I could listen to this song on repeat forever. I don’t know why. It might have something to do with this whole “martyr” complex that some people claim that I have. It might have something to do with my love of Short Circuit 2. It’s a mystery.
There it is though. Of course it isn’t just this one song. It’s like I have an inner drag queen clawing at my insides striving to get out to the hip dance beats of the power divas of the 80s. Bonnie Tyler, Gloria Gaynor, and Pat Benatar really get me bouncing in my seat.
I probably shouldn’t have admitted that on the internet.
Oh well, I’m throwing in the Legend of Billie Jean and rocking out with a young Christian Slater. Actually, now that I think of it, Christian Slater, while a poor man’s Kevin Bacon, actually has influenced a lot of my musical tastes. Not only did Billie Jean create my love of Pat Benatar, Pump up the Volume is where I first learned about the awesomeness that is Leonard Cohen.
Hmmm…..
