Overcoming the blah blahs.

And then the snows came.

I’m not a big snow guy. You would think that living in Kansas City, I’d be used to going to bed when its 45* and waking up with the world covered in a new blanket of fluffy white. I always know its coming, sooner or later, but I’m never quite ready for it. So, this morning, in the haze of Monday, when I opened the garage, I almost gave up. Snowy mornings are always a bit taxing. The day itself did not get much better from there.

Bad Days lead to the blahs

The Blahs, we’ve all had them. Its that feeling of just wanting to lay down and take a nap, maybe even go to bed a couple of hours early. The blahs are not very productive and not very fulfilling. For me, the Blahs have always been a part of life. I just get a little down sometimes. Its not something I’ve ever really found a great way of controlling, but I’ve found some ways to keep myself working even if I have the blahs.

1) A little bit of exercise. Its all over the Internet that exercise helps regulate depression. I’ve always thought that was a bit of a crock of crap. Yes, its true, doing exercise does make you happier overall, but when you’re depressed, who wants to work out? I find that when the Blahs first start kicking in, though, its a good time to get a little bit of a burn on. I keep a pair of grip weights on my desk just to give myself a little bit of a burn. It also helps prevent carpal tunnel.

2) Get a little air. Sometimes you just need to get up and go for a little walk. Especially when its a bit cool outside. That crisp air can kick start your brain. The big part though, is its pretty much impossible to fall asleep when you’re walking around. Getting your mind off of the humdrum lull of the day also helps you come back to it with a fresh perspective.

3) Take a little nap. If you can’t get the blahs out of your system, then just give in. Take a little nap, and chances are you’ll wake up feeling refreshed and ready to get going. You’re probably not going to be able to do that at work, but its pretty much your last resort anyway. Never underestimate the power of a good nap.

Me, I pretty much ended up going all the way to the third step today. I managed to get through work, but  by the time I got home, I was exhausted. A little bit of a nap on the couch, and I’m good as new. Here’s hoping I don’t have trouble getting up in time for work in the morning.  Of course, it is still snowing outside right now. There might be so much snow in the morning that we can’t leave the house.

One can only hope, and wait for spring.
