Prompt: Wisdom. What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out?
I don’t consider myself very wise. I tend to be a bit of a smart ass, and often times I shoot from the hip. Generally, if I spend any time thinking about doing something, I’ll never do it, so it becomes a spur of the moment decision or eternal procrastination. There isn’t much wisdom being used in either of those things, I think. I do, however, know someone that I think of as wise. I can turn to him when I have questions, and he usually has some advice to throw my way. I of course am talking about my father.
Recently, I asked him how old you had to be before you became wise. He told me he’d let me know when he got there. In the meantime, I’ve decided that if I can’t be wise, I might as well be knowledgeable, so I spread my brain out onto the interwebs in search of sources of great insight, wisdom, and idiot proof instructions on how to not be a complete screw up in life.
Trust me, I need these things.
Get Rich Slowly
Money is a hard one for me to keep straight, but learning how to control your income vs expenses is probably the key to freedom in the United States. Get Rich Slowly is a great site for that. Pretty much everything they tell you to do is golden, reasonable, and probably pretty common sense for someone who isn’t financially handicapped, like myself. Thanks to the tips I’ve learned for GRS, (and some help from the wisest guy I know), I’ve been able to get myself stable for the first time, and even got my credit up high enough I was able to buy a new car that didn’t suck down gas like it was so many jello-shots at a fraternity ladies night party. These guys really help you out, if you have patience, after all, its not Get Rich Quick.
The Art of Manliness
There are some classic ideas about what it means to be a man. In modern times, that idea is fading away pretty quickly. I don’t like it, and neither do the writers at The Art of Manliness. They write articles ranging from tie selection to how to build a snow fort. Several years back, I found a book entitled [amazon_link id=”1580084303″ target=”_blank” ]The Modern Gentleman[/amazon_link]. It was a great book about style and behavior. The Art of Manliness is a wonderful continuation of that idea in my mind. As someone who wants to better himself in a more classic way, AOM is a daily visit for me.
I even downloaded their android app.
Life without Pants
Life without Pants is a great blog for bloggers. Matt Cheuvront has a great deal of insight into not only the blogging world, but how the people of our generation think. Honestly, I first heard about Life without Pants from a Bnet Article entitled, “10 Gen Y Bloggers to Follow in 2010” Its the only one I’ve gone back to, and since I started following him on twitter, I go every time he updates. Not only has his blog helped me understand a few things about the process of writing a blog vs just writing, I wouldn’t be participating in Reverb10 if it wasn’t for him.
There are a lot of other places out there in the cyberlands that we can gain insight and wisdom from. The way I see it, if we spend enough time out there soaking up wisdom and information from others, eventually, like a giant sponge, we’ll be ready to start wringing some wisdom out of ourselves.
If you have any great blogs or websites that you like to go to like these, please, leave me a comment with a link below. I’m always looking for awesome new sources of knowledge.
